Help where it's needed
John H. is a can and bottle recycler who had his bike stolen at a local supermarket back in August. Chip Dawson, the former Head of Security for the Eastman Kodak Company, takes long early-morning walks and had befriended John as John made his weekend trek to a local grocery market. John shared with Chip that the proceeds of his bottle collections were going toward much needed repairs to his girlfriend's apartment. One night's take could purchase as much as 2 gallons of paint. John also shared that he was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer and finds the walk without his bike exhausting. Chip was struck by John's story and wrote a letter to the Editor of the Democrat and Chronicle.
Several RCB "Wrenches" saw the article and thought it would be great if we could outfit John with another bike. With the help of Chip and Max Anderson, the Community Conversation Coordinator and member of the Editorial Board at the D&C, we were able to connect with John. A few days later, John came to the shop and looked at several bikes and bike trailers. Wisely, he decided that a sturdy three wheeler would suit him best. John beamed as he completed his test ride and several of us were less than dry-eyed as he rode off to show his girlfriend his new set of wheels.
